pottery factory,
What do you do?
Saga Prefecture, known as the home of ceramics, has been known to have active exchanges with various countries since ancient times. A Korean potter, Lee Sam-pyeong, went to Japan and made Japan's first porcelain, and from this, Saga Prefecture's pottery technology developed.
Koraku Kiln accepts artists from various fields, both domestically and internationally, and provides a place where they can focus on their production. It is said that they are creating works that have never been seen before, inspired by Arita's materials, techniques, firing methods, and Arita's nature and people. Well then, let’s take a look at what kind of pottery artists go through and create!
Artists' hideout
There is also a guest house here at Koraku Kiln, so you can not only experience pottery but also stay for a long time and work on creating a full-scale piece. This is why artists from various places can come together. They also create and sell wonderful works. As there are various artists, you can find various products.
Koraku Kiln is said to want to convey today's 'Arita porcelain' to the world through the artist's work. We are putting all our effort into Arita ceramics through the creativity of our artists. I’m looking forward to the future of Arita Ceramics!
Arita porcelain, Arita ware
You may be wondering what Arita porcelain is. It refers to ceramics manufactured in Arita village and the surrounding areas of Saga Prefecture. As Japan's first ceramic production center, it has continued to produce products, mainly tableware and crafts, for 400 years. What makes it special is that it features transparent white porcelain, dyed with cobalt tones, and gorgeous red painted porcelain.
It has high durability and is used in a variety of ways, from artwork to daily necessities. Through a tour, you can see in detail how it is made.
