Okinawa's first prefectural museum and art museum. It was built in 1946, right after the Battle of Okinawa, so it has a deep meaning for Okinawa!
The museum exhibits materials from various fields including earth science, biology, humanity, archaeology, folklore, history, and arts and crafts, while the art museum showcases modern and contemporary art created in Okinawa, including oil paintings, watercolors, sculptures, prints, photographs, and videos.

The largest collection of materials in Japan
Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum has the largest collection of materials among all Japanese museums! As of 2017, the museum has approximately 94,000 items and the art museum has approximately 3,700 items, and the number is said to be increasing every year.
Exhibitions introducing new collections are also held regularly, and most of the works that are not on display are stored in the collection, and a ‘storage tour’ guided directly by a curator is also held every month (4-5 times a year for the art museum).
