Highlights

NAKED Yorumairi Heian Shrine is more than just a simple light-up. It's a nighttime shrine visit event where you can stroll at your own pace on a peaceful winter night, clearing your mind. Celebrating its 130th anniversary, Heian Shrine's magnificent shrine and gardens are illuminated with light and projections by creative company NAKED, revealing a familiar shrine with a whole new face. It's a wonderful time to set aside the noise of everyday life, reflect on the past year, and contemplate your hopes for the new year.
The greatest appeal of this event lies in the fact that as you slowly stroll along the path, immersed in the dazzling art, you'll naturally find yourself focusing on your inner prayers and wishes. There's even a 130th-anniversary limited-edition quiz stamp rally for children, so families can collect glowing stamps and learn about the history of Heian Shrine. This is a new kind of night shrine visit experience that transcends generations and tastes, allowing everyone to experience Kyoto's winter nights in their own way.

Program

Kyoto's representative Japanese garden
Heian Shrine

NAKED Yorumairi Heian Shrine is a nighttime worship event where visitors can experience another side of the mystical Heian Shrine on a peaceful winter night. This event, planned to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the shrine's founding, transforms the magnificent shrine and expansive Shinto shrine into a cultural and artistic experience beyond simple lighting with light, production, and projection mapping by creative company NAKED, INC. Instead of rushing along a set route, visitors can stroll at their own pace through the illuminated shrine and gardens, fully absorbing the shrine's atmosphere in the quiet night air.
The core theme of the night shrine visit is prayer. Rather than focusing solely on visually appealing lighting, the structure is designed to naturally reflect on the past year and conjure up hopes for the next through light, sound, and spatial presentation. The red pillars and white walls of the Heian Shrine, the tranquil waters of the Shinto Shrine, and the surrounding buildings are bathed in a variety of light and images, creating a landscape that harmonizes the traditional shrine appearance with modern media art. Strolling through this space allows visitors to temporarily detach from their daily lives, find time to collect their thoughts, and calm their minds at their own pace.
To celebrate the 130th anniversary, a special stamp rally has been prepared for children. As they travel around the course collecting glowing stamps, children will naturally encounter the history and symbols of Heian Shrine. Participants who answer all questions correctly will also receive a small snack gift. This expands the event beyond a romantic nighttime experience for adults to an experiential cultural experience that families can enjoy together. Couples can create memories with the illuminated shrine as a backdrop, friends can enjoy taking photos and videos, and for solo travelers, it provides a quiet, contemplative stroll—all of which are great advantages of this Yorumairi.

Area Introduction

The door that opens with light, Eungcheonmun Light-up
This area is where the iconic red gate of Heian Shrine, the Important Cultural Property Untenmon, first greets you. The entire gate is bathed in light, and the shrine and courtyard are faintly revealed beyond, marking the transition from everyday Kyoto to the night of Yorumairi. This is a scene from the entrance, a chance to catch your breath and reflect on your wishes for the evening.

Interactive art in front of the Great Hall, the Prayer Hall
The courtyard in front of the Daigokuden, an Important Cultural Property and the face of Heian Shrine, will be transformed into an interactive art space during this Yorumairi. The floor and surrounding area will be filled with light and images, and the patterns will change and react to the movements of visitors, creating a sense of "participatory prayer space" rather than simply being a place to observe. Together with the Daigokuden, which has reopened after approximately a year and a half of painting and earthquake-resistant construction, this is the key area where you can most strongly experience the special atmosphere of this night.

Garden of Light, Dongsinwon and Sangmigwan Projection Mapping
Further into the shrine, the area surrounding Dongshin-in and Sangmigwan unfolds into the "Garden of Light," a projection-mapping exhibition space. Layers of light reflecting off the water, images streaming down the building walls, and lights strung along the trees and paths create a sense of grand media art. Walking slowly through the chill of a winter night, you'll experience a quiet yet deeply immersive experience, a stark contrast to the daytime atmosphere of Heian Shrine.

Shining Footprints - 130th Anniversary Limited Edition Quiz Stamp Rally
This is a children's quiz stamp rally area designed to commemorate the shrine's 130th anniversary. As children explore hidden spots throughout the course and collect glowing stamps, they'll naturally learn about the history and symbolism of Heian Shrine. Correct answers to all questions earn them small treats, making this an unforgettable experience for families, as they go beyond simply admiring the beautiful lights and complete missions together.
