From September to November 2025, a special exhibition will highlight Hokusai, the world's most famous Japanese artist. His iconic work, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," is a masterpiece on par with da Vinci's Mona Lisa, and everyone has likely seen it at least once. Hokusai created a staggering 30,000 works during his 90-year life, moving 93 times and freely using over 30 pen names, leading a unique life.
His expressions, which were ahead of their time and used only paper and brush, are said to be the roots of Japanese manga and animation culture, so if you are curious about his unique world, be sure to see this exhibition.
The beginning of manga and animation
Hokusai, all of it
We introduce an exhibition where you can vividly feel the genius and imagination of Hokusai from 200 years ago, which became the starting point of expressive techniques of modern manga and animation, such as 'focused lines', 'description of gags', and 'animation original drawings'. This exhibition (original title: ぜんぶ、北斎のしわざでした。) is centered around the Uragami Collection, which is considered to be one of the best in the world with 1,700 volumes of Hokusai manga, and includes a total of 15 Hokusai manga, illustrations for graphic novels, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa, a three-volume series of One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji drawn in his later years, 102 paintings, and 16 original drawings that are being shown to the public for the first time in Japan, bringing together over 300 works in one place.
The limited-time event will be held at the Tokyo Creative Museum from September 13 to November 30, 2025, so don't miss it!
