A place where tradition lives and breathes, Gassho-zukuri Minkaen
Located in the heart of Shirakawa-go, the Gasshō-zukuri Minkaen is an open-air museum that preserves traditional homes once inhabited by locals. With over 20 Gasshō-zukuri houses recreated to their original appearance, a walk through the museum feels like stepping back in time to a village hundreds of years ago. During the light-up season, the warm glow of the thatched roofs, blending with the snow-covered village, creates an even more magical atmosphere.
Inside the museum, you can see up close traces of the lives of people from that time, such as old farming tools, household items, and braziers, making it a space where you can understand the culture and traditions of Shirakawa-go at a glance.
During the light-up period, a traditional Japanese dessert, the famous red bean porridge, is provided with your admission ticket, so you can take a break and enjoy a sweet snack under the lights.
The Minkaen at night shines even more beautifully than during the day. Feel the true warmth of Shirakawa-go there.
