A day trip from Kanazawa to Tateyama Kurobe, a spring trip amidst snow-covered cliffs.
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in spring is renowned for its snow walls, attracting visitors from around the world. This tour begins at Kanazawa Station, heads toward Tateyama, and ascends the Alpine Route to Murodo Tange, where you'll experience the vast snow corridors firsthand. As you ascend by bus, cable car, and highland bus, you'll soon be greeted by a snowy landscape of early spring, with white walls of snow rising on both sides.
The highlight is the Tateyama Snow Wall Walk. Each year, snow is cleared from the most heavily snowed-out sections of the path, creating a 500-meter-long path. Snow walls, up to 20 meters high, tower on both sides, creating the feeling of walking through a white canyon. The contrast between the clear blue sky and the pristine white snow walls creates a breathtaking spectacle, unlike anything seen in photographs. During certain periods, the Panorama Road, offering panoramic views of the Tateyama Mountain Range from a snowy walk, is also open, allowing visitors to fully experience the scenery unfolding along the snow-covered ridge.
For lunch, enjoy a Kanazawa specialty, a shibazushi bento box. This traditional oshizushi is made with carefully selected rice and seafood from the Kanazawa coast, and is a local specialty often served at festivals. On the way back, stop by the Sasaraya Shiroebi Senbei shop, where you can try your hand at grilling your own senbei, made with Toyama Prefecture-grown rice and white shrimp, and enjoy some shopping. This itinerary is the most efficient way to experience spring in Tateyama Kurobe, with its snow walls, snowfields, local cuisine, and activities all in one day.
