Where the Broth Warms the Soul: Shimaoden Takara

An izakaya in Miyakojima where locals linger and time slows down

Directed by AKI

When night falls on Miyakojima, the sun dips below the sea, and the island’s energy shifts.
In the quieter streets of Hirara, a warm light spills out from a humble shopfront with the sign “Shimaoden Takara.”
It doesn’t shout for attention — it doesn’t need to.
The aroma of slow-simmered broth and the soft hum of local laughter say everything.

Oden like no other, with the tenderness of time

At the heart of Takara is oden — not the kind you find at convenience stores,
but the kind that’s been bubbling for hours, lovingly tended, rich with umami.

The tebichi (pork trotter) is melt-in-your-mouth tender, simmered for over 6 hours.
Alongside it come daikon, konjac, tofu, egg, and kelp — each absorbing the deep, golden broth.
Order the assorted oden platter and dip it into their house mustard-soy blend.
One bite and you’ll understand why this is a local favorite.

Food made for sake, and sake made for nights like this

Beyond the oden, Takara offers dishes that make you want to linger.

Squid ink stir-fry – salty, rich, unforgettable
Whelk miso rice balls – simple, but deeply satisfying
Daily sashimi – fresh from the nearby seas

To drink: draft Orion beer or one of several types of awamori, Okinawa’s local spirit.
It’s the kind of place where your first glass leads to a second, and suddenly it’s past ten.

A place that feels like it’s always been there

Wooden interiors, warm lighting, soft jazz or sanshin melodies playing low…
Locals chat quietly over plates of oden.
The chef works steadily behind the counter, occasionally nodding with a smile.
You don’t come here to rush — you come to feel grounded.
