France Bans Smoking in Public Spaces

What You Need to Know Before Your Trip

Directed by Aki

France is turning a new page in public health policy. Starting July 2025, smoking will be completely banned in all public outdoor areas, including parks, beaches, forests, and even spaces around schools.

This might come as a surprise, especially in a country where smoking was once considered a part of its cultural identity. But now, anyone caught smoking in public places can face fines of up to €135 (about $145).

Travelers, take note

Whether you're strolling along the Seine or relaxing at a Parisian café terrace, make sure you're only smoking in designated areas. Even electronic cigarettes (vapes) are included in this ban, so be mindful.

Why the change?

France is following a broader European movement to protect public health and curb smoking among younger generations. The goal? A smoke-free generation.

This ban not only protects people from secondhand smoke but also aims to keep the streets, beaches, and natural landscapes of France clean and enjoyable for everyone.

If you're planning to visit France soon, especially Paris, make sure to stay up to date with the new rules—and enjoy the journey responsibly.
