Kyoto Nights in 2026: NAKED Illuminates Again

Nijo Castle & Higashi Honganji/Shosei-en: WAUG Discount Reservations Now Open

2026.09.24Directed by Travel Insider Jay

Autumn in Kyoto offers moments where the night becomes more anticipated than the day. As the bustling temples and gardens quiet down and light begins to grace the ancient structures, a city entirely different from the one seen during the day unfolds.

In the autumn of 2026, two NAKED events will make those nights even more special. Experience ‘NAKED meets Nijo Castle 2026’, set against the backdrop of the World Heritage site Nijo Castle, and ‘NAKED GARDEN NIGHTS Higashi Honganji & Shosei-en’, a journey through the autumn nights of Higashi Honganji and Shosei-en.

Both events are now available for discounted booking through WAUG.

Encounter 400-Year-Old Kyoto Through Light

First, let's focus on Nijo Castle. 2026 marks the 400th anniversary of the grand cultural event held at Nijo Castle during the Edo period, the ‘Kan'ei Procession’. This year, NAKED reinterprets this special history with contemporary light and art. Upon entering the castle, the spaces of Nijo Castle, from the important cultural property Karamon gate to Ninomaru Palace and its gardens, and the inner citadel, seamlessly transform into a single, grand artwork.

Through projection mapping, as well as productions utilizing light, sound, and scent, you'll experience the aesthetics and design that adorned Kyoto 400 years ago. Nijo Castle, viewed as a cultural asset during the day, becomes a completely new artistic space at night.

NAKED meets Nijo Castle 2026 runs from October 23rd to December 5th, nightly from 6 PM to 10 PM.

Another Night, a Little Slower

While Nijo Castle dazzles with light, there's another side to Kyoto's nights. NAKED GARDEN NIGHTS Higashi Honganji & Shosei-en offers an experience closer to enjoying the autumn night itself at a leisurely pace through the gardens.

The nighttime scenery unfolds around Higashi Honganji, within walking distance of Kyoto Station, and its detached villa garden, Shosei-en. Shosei-en, in particular, is a Japanese garden that has long welcomed esteemed guests, offering a much quieter Kyoto experience after the daytime crowds have departed.

In this event, you can stroll through the garden's diverse landscapes, enjoying paired drinks that complement each scene. Instead of rushing to see the lights, it's about pausing to admire the garden, savoring a drink, and then continuing your walk. It's a way to spend your Kyoto autumn evening a little more slowly.

The event runs from October 31st to December 6th.

A Season Where Just Seeing Kyoto by Day Feels Incomplete

After exploring Kiyomizu-dera and Arashiyama during the day, immerse yourself in NAKED's creations as dusk falls. You could choose Nijo Castle, where brilliant digital art meets history, or Higashi Honganji and Shosei-en for a tranquil Japanese garden night.

If your schedule allows, experiencing both is highly recommended. Although both are created by NAKED, they offer different facets of Kyoto: one is an experience of revisiting 400 years of history through modern art, while the other is an experience of lingering slowly within an autumn garden. Most importantly, the period from late October to early December, when both events are held, is a wonderful time to combine with your autumn trip to Kyoto.
