Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple and the heart of Asakusa, is usually bustling with visitors passing through Kaminarimon Gate and strolling down Nakamise-dori. But this fall, there's a compelling reason to return after sunset.

'ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2026' runs for just five days, from October 30 to November 3, 2026. This unique event brings Senso-ji's 1,400-year history and Japan's traditional arts to life with light and projection mapping. Where 1,400 Years of History Illuminate

What makes this event truly special is that it's more than just a dazzling light-up of Senso-ji. The motifs for the projection mapping are drawn from the temple's rich cultural heritage, including its large ema votive tablets and the 'Kanbun Engi' scroll depicting its founding, as well as ukiyo-e prints deeply connected to Senso-ji's history.

This year, for the first time in its history, projection mapping will be displayed on the main hall of Senso-ji. As light and images begin to flow across the immense structure and the Hozomon Gate, the familiar Senso-ji you saw during the day transforms into a monumental work of art. If you appreciate both traditional Japan and modern Tokyo, this promises to be a truly impressive evening.

The Real Magic Unfolds in the Denboin Garden

It would be a shame to leave after just seeing the projection mapping. This event also offers special access to the normally off-limits Denboin Garden and the Ema-do Hall.

At Denboin Garden, experience a 'sea of clouds' effect, as if mist is enveloping the grounds, followed by 'Kinryu Yakai' (Golden Dragon Night Festival) starting at 5 PM, where the entire garden is bathed in light. A short original dance performance adds another layer to this deeper Asakusa night.

The Ema-do Hall houses about 50 large ema tablets painted by historical artists like Utagawa Kuniyoshi. This is precisely why the event is so special, even for those who have visited Senso-ji multiple times. You get to explore spaces usually inaccessible to the public and connect with the preserved culture within, moving beyond the crowded, famous views of Senso-ji.

Experience Asakusa by Day and by Night

Consider spending a longer day in Asakusa this time. Explore Nakamise-dori and Senso-ji during the day, and discover some of its long-standing eateries and cafes. Then, as dusk settles, make your way back to Senso-ji.

From 5 PM, the Denboin Garden lights up, and from 6 PM, projection mapping begins at the Senso-ji main hall and Hozomon Gate. Walk amidst the remnants of the Edo period by day, and witness that history reborn through light and digital art by night.

While viewing the projection mapping on the Senso-ji main hall and Hozomon Gate is free, a special viewing ticket is required to enter the normally private Denboin Garden and Ema-do Hall. As many visitors are expected, especially on weekends and holidays, it's recommended to secure your tickets in advance if you plan to visit these areas.
