There's more than one way to get from Osaka to Awaji Island besides crossing a bridge by land. Take a boat from Fuke Port at the southern tip of Osaka, and you'll reach Sumoto Port on Awaji Island in about 40 minutes.

The Fuke-Sumoto Liner is a passenger boat that has been reconnecting these two ports since 2017, reviving a sea route that was once discontinued. It's a great fit for travelers who want to arrive on the island while taking in sea views, and for cyclists who want to ride around the island with their own bikes.

40 Minutes at Sea: From Fuke Port to Sumoto Port

The boat runs eight sailings a day, or four round trips. Based on the 2026 timetable, the first boat leaves Fuke Port at 8:05 AM, and the last return boat departs Sumoto Port at 7:00 PM.

You can cross on a morning boat, spend the day on the island and return in the evening, or stay overnight at a hot spring inn near the port for a two-day trip. Aboard the 120-passenger boat, the island draws closer before you know it as you gaze out at the calm sea.

Getting to Fuke Port and Preparing to Board

Fuke Port is in Misaki Town, at the southernmost tip of Osaka Prefecture. It's a 3-minute walk from Fukeko Station on the Nankai Tanagawa Line, so it's easy to reach by train, and it's also close to Kansai International Airport.

The WAUG boarding ticket is valid only on the date you select. You need to exchange your e-ticket for a boarding pass at the ticket office of your departure port at least 10 minutes before departure, so arrive with time to spare. Reservations can't be changed or refunded after purchase.

The coast around Fuke Port is known for sunsets beautiful enough to be listed among Japan's 100 best sunset spots. It's nice to stroll along the shore while waiting for an afternoon boat.

Starting Your Awaji Island Trip from Sumoto Port

Sumoto Port sits in the central part of Awaji Island, making it a good base for exploring the island. Hot spring inns are gathered around the port, and a walking path runs along the coast.

Sports bikes can be loaded as they are, without being taken apart. The bike rack holds up to 18 bikes, so any more must be carried in portable bike bags, and there is a separate fee for bicycles.

As of 2026, this is a seasonal route that runs only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from spring to autumn. Check the official information first to see whether the boat runs on your travel date and whether the timetable has changed, and if you'd like to reach the island across the sea instead of over a bridge, set off for Awaji Island on the Fuke-Sumoto Liner.
