Tokyo seamlessly blends modern attractions with uniquely atmospheric cafés that evoke a sense of bygone eras. These kissaten (traditional Japanese coffee shops) have played a significant role in Japan's coffee culture and history. We present three such establishments, each with a rich history and undeniable charm.

First on our list is Café De Làmbre. Established in 1948 in Tokyo's Ginza district, this is a truly authentic coffee house. Founded by the late Ichiro Sekiguchi, often referred to as the "God of Coffee," the café is now run by his disciples and successors. Focusing solely on coffee, they offer uniquely aged beans for a truly special experience. Prices average around ¥1,000.

Founded in 1938, Kayaba Coffee is nestled in Yanaka, a district known for its preserved old Tokyo streetscape. The Kayaba Coffee building, constructed during the Taisho 5 era (1912-1926), retains a nostalgic atmosphere with its dark wood and sturdy leather chairs. Here, you can enjoy not only coffee but also a variety of other beverages and light meals. Their egg sandwiches and toast are particularly renowned.

Located just next to Shibuya in Tokyo, you'll find Meikyoku Kissa Lion, a café brimming with antique and retro charm. This is one of the few remaining coffee music houses in Tokyo still operating today. The Baroque-style architecture and antique interior, which has preserved 100 years of history, are truly remarkable. Evoking the atmosphere of music and coffee cafés popular in the 1950s and 1960s, you can enjoy coffee while listening to a wide selection of LP records. They also host concerts, with full performances from 3 PM to 7 PM daily. Thanks to Meikyoku Kissa Lion's custom-built audio system, guests can enjoy a superior sound experience comparable to that of a real concert hall.
