A 9-person small-group trip
to Asahiyama Zoo, Biei and Furano
Check in at 7:50 AM at the bus parking lot by the North Exit of Sapporo Station, or get picked up at your hotel in central Sapporo, and depart at 8:00 AM. The vehicle is a 10-seater Toyota HiAce, and the driver doubles as your guide. For hotel pickups, the driver sets the order and time based on distance and conditions on the day.
After about 2 hours 30 minutes you arrive at Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, Japan's northernmost zoo and home to more than 800 animals. Explore freely for about 100 minutes and see iconic cold-region animals up close. Zoo admission is not included and must be purchased on site.
Admire Biei's Blue Pond
About an hour from the zoo lies Biei's Blue Pond, an artificial pond whose formation is linked to the 1988 eruption of Mt. Tokachidake in Daisetsuzan National Park. Minerals in the water give it shades of aquamarine, emerald green and cobalt blue. You stay about 15 minutes.
Shirahige Waterfall, an ice waterfall in winter
Just 5 minutes from the Blue Pond, Shirahige Waterfall is named for its water that falls softly like a white beard. In winter the flowing water freezes into a blue ice waterfall. You stay about 25 minutes.
Stroll through the forest craft village of Ningle Terrace
About an hour's drive brings you to Ningle Terrace in Furano, a forest walking trail designed by writer So Kuramoto, with more than ten cabin workshops selling handmade windmills, kaleidoscopes, wood carvings and candles. After about 80 minutes of strolling, return to Sapporo. Around 6:30 PM, hotel pickup guests are dropped off at their hotels and other guests near the bus parking lot at Sapporo Station North Exit.
