The Former Aoyama Villa is the villa of the Aoyama family, who built an enormous fortune from herring fishing during the Meiji and Taisho eras. It was inspired by the third head, Masae, who at age 17 was captivated by the Honma family mansion in Sakata, Yamagata, and it was completed over about six and a half years from 1917. It is said that the family insisted on only the finest things and aimed to create an artistic building.

Admire Taisho-era interiors in 18 rooms

The two-story wooden building stands on a site of about 1,500 tsubo, with 18 rooms of 6 to 15 tatami mats, each decorated with a different atmosphere. Built with no expense spared, it is known as one of Hokkaido's finest art mansions, and in 2010 it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. A visit takes about 20–30 minutes.

Stroll through the seasonal garden

Otaru Kihinkan has a garden that shows a different face each season, which you can enjoy together with the villa. The on-site restaurant serves herring dishes and more, but meals are not included in this product.
