While China boasts numerous metropolises, few cities offer a landscape as unique as Chongqing. Skyscrapers ascend steep hillsides, and roads and railways intersect at different elevations. Monorails glide between buildings, and as night falls, the riverside architecture glows with vibrant lights. Your first encounter with Chongqing feels like stepping into a movie set in a futuristic city.

Located in southwestern China, Chongqing is a vast city where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers converge. The city's formation on mountainous terrain, lacking flat land, has created a three-dimensional cityscape rarely seen in other major cities. While the scenes that go viral on social media are impressive, experiencing Chongqing on foot truly reveals why it's such a special place.

The Monorail That Runs Through Buildings: Chongqing's Astonishing Scenery

One of Chongqing's iconic scenes is the monorail passing through Liziba Station. This is where trains on Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2 traverse a station built inside a residential building, a unique urban landscape known worldwide. The sight of the building and the railway integrated into a single structure most intuitively showcases Chongqing's three-dimensional urban structure.

Below Liziba Station, a viewing area allows you to watch the trains pass through the building. Wait for the moment a train approaches and capture photos or videos. Although the train actually passes through a station located within the building, it gives the impression of piercing through the structure when viewed from the outside.

In Chongqing, even the elevation of the streets offers a unique experience. What appears to be the first floor of a building might be a higher level from another direction, and crossing a bridge can lead you to a street at a completely different height. Walking through the city center, where stairs, slopes, and elevated roads are intricately connected, you'll naturally understand why Chongqing is called the 'Mountain City' (山城).

Hongyadong's Nightscape and the City Where Two Rivers Meet

The most dazzling place to witness Chongqing's nights is Hongyadong. This large complex is situated on a steep cliff along the Jialing River, characterized by an exterior that reinterprets traditional Chinese architectural styles in a modern way. As the sun sets and the lights turn on, the entire layered structure glows golden, creating Chongqing's signature night view.

While Hongyadong houses restaurants and shops, it's best viewed from the riverside or nearby bridges to appreciate the entire building. The area around Qiansimen Bridge offers a view that encompasses Hongyadong, the Jialing River, and the modern city skyline. As it gets crowded in the evening, allow ample travel time if you wish to capture photos leisurely.

Another charm of Chongqing lies in its two rivers. Near Chaotianmen, where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, stands the massive Raffles City Chongqing. Its unique architectural design, with several skyscrapers connected horizontally, is impressive, and its observation decks offer views of Chongqing's three-dimensional skyline.

If you wish to see the city from the water, a night cruise is a great option. From the river, Hongyadong's lights, the bridges, and the high-rise buildings lining the riverbanks unfold like a panorama. The city, which felt complex during the day, transforms into a vast landscape connected by light at night.

Yangtze River Cableway and Unique Chongqing Travel Experiences

For a closer experience of Chongqing, consider riding the Yangtze River Cableway. This cable car connects both sides of the river, offering views of the Yangtze and the cityscape from above. During the short ride across the river, you can appreciate Chongqing's dense buildings, the wide water surface, and the layered roads from a different perspective.

Food is also an unmissable part of a trip to Chongqing. The representative Chongqing hot pot is famous for its intense flavor, a blend of red chilies and Sichuan peppercorns. This dish, where various ingredients are cooked in a spicy and numbing broth, is a great way to experience Chongqing's vibrant food culture. If you're not accustomed to spicy food, check the spice level and broth type when ordering.

For a trip to Chongqing, we recommend visiting Liziba Station and the Yangtze River Cableway during the day, and then enjoying the night views of Hongyadong and the Chaotianmen area after sunset. Given the city's steep terrain and complex routes, it's advisable not to underestimate travel times based solely on map distances. While public transport is convenient for popular attractions, remember that the elevation difference between station exits and your actual destination can be significant.

Chongqing isn't a city you visit just to see one specific landmark. From trains running between buildings and streets built on cliffs to the nightscapes unfolding over the river, the entire city is a grand spectacle. If you're looking to escape the familiar and encounter a completely different urban landscape, Chongqing is a compelling next travel destination.
