If you want to spend a day from Munich walking through a fairytale-like town, we recommend Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Considered a highlight of the Romantic Road, Rothenburg is a town encircled by medieval walls, preserving its historic old town with charming half-timbered houses and narrow alleys. Walking among the red rooftops feels like stepping back in time.

For those who find navigating to smaller towns a bit daunting, a convenient day bus tour departing from Munich offers a hassle-free way to experience it. This is a great option for first-time visitors to German small towns or anyone seeking picturesque, photo-worthy locations.

Alleys Under Red Roofs and the Charm of Plönlein

Upon entering the old town, you'll be greeted by streets lined with red-roofed, colorful half-timbered houses. Each corner reveals charming shops, cafes, and museums, inviting you to explore at a leisurely pace.

The most iconic view in Rothenburg is undoubtedly Plönlein. Translating to 'little square,' this spot features a charming triangular plaza where two streets diverge, framed by the Siebers Tower (circa 1385) and the Kobolzeller Gate (circa 1360).

With its yellow half-timbered house and the two towers perfectly captured in one frame, this scene is celebrated as one of Germany's most beautiful medieval streetscapes.

Walking the Town Wall Walkway Around the Old Town

Rothenburg's old town is enclosed by approximately 4 kilometers of medieval walls, punctuated by numerous towers and gates. A portion of these walls allows visitors to walk along the ramparts, offering a unique perspective.

The northern and eastern sections are particularly impressive, with walls reaching up to 6 meters high, providing stunning views over the rooftops and alleys below.

The 'Turmweg' (Tower Walk), which circles the old town along the ramparts, spans about 4 kilometers and takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete with the help of informational signs. If your time is limited on a day tour, consider focusing on a shorter, accessible section.

A Day's Itinerary Including Harburg Castle

The tour departs at 8:30 AM from a meeting point near Karlsplatz in Munich and lasts approximately 10.5 hours. The itinerary includes a stop at Harburg Castle before heading to Rothenburg for free time, concluding with the return journey to Munich.

The visit to Harburg Castle includes an English-guided tour. Please note that the entrance fee is separate and payable by card only. The path up to the castle is steep, and there are stairs inside, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

From November 20th to December 23rd, 2026, the Reiterlesmarkt Christmas market will be held in the area around Marktplatz (closed on November 22nd). Tour times may vary depending on the season, so always check your voucher. Add a day in this medieval town to your Munich itinerary.
