A Unique Lace Experience in Burano, Venice
The true revival of Burano lace began in 1978 when a consortium, comprising Venice's key public institutions – the City Council, the Regional Government, the Chamber of Commerce, the Tourism Board, and the Andriana Marcello Foundation – established the "Burano Lace Consortium." This initiative led to the systematic organization and classification of the vast archival materials from the old lace school. The historic building was then transformed into an exhibition space, laying the foundation for the Burano Lace Museum. The museum is situated in the historic Torcello Doge’s Palace building on Burano’s main square, Galuppi, and was formerly the renowned Burano Lace School, which operated from 1872 to 1970. Today, it proudly displays rare and intricate pieces that span the history of Venetian lagoon lace from its origins to the present day, offering a rich cultural heritage amidst the island’s uniquely vibrant atmosphere.
A Journey Through Time with Lace: The Museum’s Origin Story

Your visit begins in the main exhibition hall on the first floor, where a short video with English subtitles introduces you to the world of lace making. Accompanying explanatory panels provide easy-to-understand insights into the secrets of various techniques and stitches, including Venetian and Burano lace. Ascending to the second floor, you'll find the collection divided into four chronological sections: Origins to the 16th Century, the 17th-18th Centuries, the 19th-20th Centuries, and the Burano Lace School period (1872–1970). Each section features not only video materials and descriptive panels but also a variety of historical artifacts, such as spectacles, clothing, books, drawings, and paintings, offering a multi-layered understanding. Furthermore, during the museum’s operating hours, you can witness skilled lace artisans at work, providing a live experience of how traditional techniques are passed down through generations.
Why You Must Visit

The Burano Lace Museum offers a unique opportunity to experience delicate craft heritage, rarely found elsewhere in Europe, and is a place to feel the pinnacle of Venetian craftsmanship. It goes beyond mere exhibition to vividly convey the story of art and tradition preserved across generations by an island community. A significant draw is the ability to observe the ongoing handicraft process up close. Combined with the colorful scenery of Burano island, it provides a culturally and visually impressive experience, making it one of the most original and memorable stops on any Venice itinerary.
