BESTThis was a wonderful way to explore a piece of Lisbon’s history without the crowds. The São Jorge Castle grounds offer breathtaking views of the city and the Tagus River absolutely worth the visit. The church was quiet and atmospheric, a great contrast to the bustling streets below. I especially liked that the ticket included a drink; sipping a cold beer while overlooking Lisbon’s rooftops was a highlight of the day. Very easy entry with the ticket, and definitely recommended for first-timers in Lisbon!

Reasons to Visit the Castle of São Jorge
Perched atop the Alfama district, this castle sits atop the highest of Lisbon's seven hills. In 1371, King João I, who married Philippa of Lancaster, dedicated the castle to Saint George, the patron saint of England, earning it the name "São Jorge," meaning "Saint George" in Portuguese.
The interior of the castle walls was once a palace, now a park. Inside, the museum houses artifacts from the Iron Age, the Moors around the 6th century, and the royal family's 18th-century relics. Other highlights include the Tower of Ulysses, which housed the royal family's key documents and treasures, and the Tower of Loyalty, which served as the headquarters of the army. The castle's greatest attraction is the panoramic view of Lisbon. Climbing to the top at sunset is a fantastic way to enjoy the view. It's the perfect spot to watch a beautiful sunset.
