A historical monument with a long history,
port saint andre
Fort Saint-Andre has been a historic monument since 1903. This magnificent medieval fortress towers above the Rhone River at a rocky interchange in the Andaon Mountains. Commissioned by French King Philippe Le Bel to demonstrate his power, the Fort Saint-Andre is an outstanding testament to 14th-century military architecture. Once a symbol of royal power, this fortress housed a permanent garrison, a court of justice, and a prison. You can see the graffiti of prisoners who were imprisoned here in the 18th and 19th centuries! Tour the rooms and buildings, enter the chapel, and enjoy spectacular views of the Papal Palace, the Pont d'Avignon, the Philippe Le Bel Tower, Mont Bentou, the Alpilès, the Luberon, and more.
About the structure of the fortress
Fort Saint-Andre consists of five citadels located on a hill. Each fortress has a variety of functions, and its walls, watchtowers, donjos, and battlements are well preserved. Inside the fortress there is a museum, an observatory, and gardens, where visitors can learn about the fortress's history and architecture and enjoy beautiful views of downtown Avignon.
