Depart from Sofia and
Discover Rila Monastery and UNESCO Sites in a Day
Your tour begins with a departure from central Sofia aboard a large tour bus. This is a large group tour, operated for affordability and convenience, utilizing a 45-65 seater bus shared with other travelers and multilingual guide groups.
Depending on your selected option, you'll either follow a live guide or explore independently with an audio app. The inclusion of Boyana Church, St. Ivan Cave, or the Bell Monument varies by option. Travelers on different options may share the same bus, and if you book additional options like the cave or Boyana Church, your transport or guide might change upon arrival at Rila.
Admire Medieval Frescoes at Boyana Church

If your option includes Boyana Church, your first stop after about a 25-minute drive from Sofia will be this UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you'll explore the historically significant pre-Renaissance frescoes with your guide.
To preserve the delicate frescoes, interior visits are limited to 10 minutes per group, with only 8-10 people allowed inside at a time, so you may need to wait before entering. Even if Boyana Church is not part of your chosen option, some tours may make a brief stop at the church's garden, without reducing your time at Rila Monastery.
Explore Rila Monastery, Bulgaria's Largest Orthodox Monastery

After a scenic 90-minute drive through picturesque countryside and mountains, you'll arrive at Rila Monastery. As Bulgaria's largest and most important Orthodox monastery, you can tour the complex with your dedicated guide or use the audio app for a self-guided exploration.
During your free time, take photos of the mountain scenery, sample local Bulgarian treats like Mekitsi (fried dough), or visit the monastery's museum (separate entrance fee applies). Your tour concludes with a bus ride back to central Sofia, arriving around 5:30 PM.
※ Boyana Church is closed on January 1st, Orthodox Easter Sunday, and December 24th-25th. On these dates, the tour will only visit Rila Monastery.
※ Return times to Sofia may be later during peak season, Bulgarian public holidays, or when operating large group tours.
※ The itinerary is for reference only and may be subject to change due to local conditions.
