Famous for its grand architecture and strict discipline, Eastern State was the world's first true "penitentiary," designed to inspire penitence in the hearts of prisoners. The building itself was an architectural marvel, with running water and central heating before the White House. See the vaulted, sky-lit cells that once held some of America's most notorious criminals, including bank robber "Slick Willie" Sutton and Al Capone.
