This was a completely impromptu plan with my friends, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions ever! The alpacas were incredibly cute, gentle and clearly very well cared for. The farm was clean, spacious and peaceful. Our tour was personally conducted by Kit, the owner, who was so friendly, welcoming and passionate about what he does. He shared the story behind how he started the farm, some funny stories from his life, and lots of interesting information about caring for alpacas. You can genuinely see how much he loves these animals and takes pride in looking after them. Kit even carried the baby alpaca over and helped position it on our shoulders for photos, such a thoughtful touch and definitely one of the highlights of our visit! The location is also very convenient, only around 20mins drive from the CBD, and Metro bus is another option if you don't have a car. Kit was even kind enough to offer us a lift to the bus station afterwards. Highly recommend this experience! 🤍

We were extremely impressed with this tour. Highly recommend. Had plenty of time to interact with the alpacas and also learn about the background of the farm. Kit was very professional and we loved this tour!

Lovely experience with the Silverstrean alpaca farm tour. Kit and Cheryl were warm and welcoming. The alpacas are very well behaved and have won many medals. We enjoyed feeding, petting, and taking photos with them. After the tour, we were welcome to spend more time with the animals or walk around the farm at our own pace. Highly recommended. They also offer accommodation on site.

Arrive at Silverstream Alpaca Stud and
hear the farm's story

On arrival at Silverstream Alpaca Stud, on the northern edge of Christchurch about 20 minutes' drive from the CBD, please let reception know you are here. The farm has welcomed visitors for 20 years. Take a seat and hear how alpacas changed the life of the Johnson family, including life as alpaca farmers and exporting live animals to Europe and Asia.

Feed and meet the alpacas up close

After a short safety briefing, meet the alpacas in person. Feed them, pat them and take photos as you interact freely, and in the November–April season you can cuddle a baby alpaca. The farm owner offers fun, informative commentary and answers all your questions.

Touch alpaca fleece in the fibre shed

After your time with the alpacas, head to the fibre shed to touch and feel award-winning fleece. Experience its softness and lustre up close.

Visit the shop and trophy room and stroll the gardens

The tour ends with a visit to the farm shop and trophy room, where you can buy a range of alpaca products; Eftpos and Apple Pay are accepted. Afterwards, wander the spacious lawns and riverside gardens or spend more time with the alpacas.
