From Auckland: Waitomo Glowworm Caves Day Tour - Hotel Pickup

Absolutely worth the travel time and investment. We had initially only booked for Waitomo Caves and were informed that the only availability is with combined trip to Hobbiton. We were initially reluctant as we're not movie set fans but the combined activities equaled a 12-hour trip outside of Auckland that we loved. The tour guide gave us tons of info en route, which made the stretches of road (and gorgeous landscape) even better. I highly recommend!

Phenomenal. Our guide was phenomenal and answered all of our questions. We had a great time!

Our guide talking to us and driving us through the countryside of New Zealand was more enjoyable than the slightly overrated Waitomo glow worm caves. You only spend fifteen minutes max observing the glow worms which didn’t feel worth the time spent getting there. The van ride was extremely comfortable though. If you want to do this excursion, I recommend pairing it with a trip to Hobbiton so all of that driving time will feel worth it.

First let me say the caves were extremely interesting and a unique experience. Truly reminds you how wonderful nature is. Our driving guide Geoff was great and obviously knowledgeable and caring about his country, and the scenery is pastoral and lovely as you head to the caves. My only qualm is the drive. It is a long drive from Aukland (around 2 hrs each way with a 6am start) and the visit to the cave takes less than an hour so a long way for a short visit. The caves are worth a view but perhaps combine the visit with another stop to make the 4 hour round trip more balanced.
