very good and the best tour in New Zeland

I went on a horse trek through Muriwai State Park and along the famous black sand beach and it was pure magic. We covered almost 6 kilometres of stunning natural beauty — rolling coastal tracks, dramatic cliffs, and the wide open black sand shoreline stretching out under the sky. The horses were well-handled and calm, and the guides clearly knew the area and the animals. It felt relaxed and safe the whole way. There’s something special about moving through that landscape at a horse’s pace — the sound of the waves, the wind, and just being out in nature without any rush. If you’re looking for a peaceful, scenic way to start your day (or just escape for a couple of hours), this is it. Highly recommended⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amazing! Will be back!

Highlights

Ride a horse at Muriwai Beach, about 40 minutes by car from central Auckland, on a guided trek across black-sand beach, sand dunes, and Woodhill Forest. Follow the coastline with the Tasman Sea beside you, and ride trails through Woodhill Forest, a private forest closed to the public. Groups are limited to 8 riders, with one guide for every four riders. No riding experience is needed: after a safety briefing, the trek proceeds at a walking pace, so beginners can join too.

Program

Get a safety briefing at Muriwai Horse Park
and meet your horse

On arrival at Muriwai Horse Park, receive a full safety and orientation briefing of about 15 minutes and meet the horse you will ride. A New Zealand safety-approved riding helmet and a reflective vest are provided, and no riding experience is required.

The trek departs at 9:30 AM. Guides, each with over 10 years of riding experience and a Level 2 first aid certificate, accompany the group at a ratio of one guide per four riders.

Ride across black-sand beach
and sand dunes

Leave the dunes behind and follow the endless black-sand coastline of Muriwai Beach with the Tasman Sea on your left. The horses may slow down at freshwater pools to drink and take a break.

The trek is mainly at a walking pace, with possible light trotting at the guide's discretion depending on the group's experience.

Ride the trails of Woodhill Forest,
closed to the public

Next, ride the exclusive trails and scrubland of Woodhill Forest, a private pine forest closed to the general public. The operator has held an Auckland Council permit to run horse treks in this area since 2013. After about 2 hours in the saddle, return to the horse park.

※ The itinerary may change depending on the weather and tides, and you may spend more or less time on the beach than scheduled.
※ Tours run in most weather conditions.
