Get picked up in Rotorua
and head to the foot of Mount Tarawera

After pickup from your accommodation in Rotorua, travel to the foot of Mount Tarawera. On the way, your local guide shares stories of the eruption that reshaped the landscape, as well as local myths and legends.

Climb the mountain in a 4WD vehicle

At the foot of the mountain, board a 4WD off-road vehicle and climb through dense native bush. You stop briefly at a solar-powered base camp, where your guide leads a karakia, a traditional Māori prayer, asking for blessing and protection for the journey ahead.

Walk to the summit and enjoy 360-degree views

From the base camp, walk toward the summit with your guide. Geothermal features, native forest, and lakes stretch out in every direction, and your guide talks about the history and cultural significance of the land as you walk. The guided crater walk lasts 90 minutes.

Take a scree run into the volcanic crater

At the summit, you stand on the rim of an ancient volcanic crater. If you wish, you can join a scree run, a short run down the steep slope into the crater below. Afterward, head back down the mountain and return to Rotorua.
