This one-hour guided tour takes you through Whakarewarewa in Rotorua, a village where Māori people still live today, with a local guide. The village guides are direct descendants of the early Māori guides who have led tourism in New Zealand for generations, and they share the village's history and traditions firsthand. See up close the daily life of a geothermal village, where residents cook in hot pools and steam vents, bathe in thermal water and heat their homes. View the geysers from a lookout and explore silica formations, boiling hot springs and village landmarks such as the marae and a historic church.

Walk Whakarewarewa,
a living Māori village, with a guide
The tour starts at the entrance of Whakarewarewa village at 17 Tryon Street. After a short safety briefing (about 5 minutes), explore the village with a village guide for about an hour. The guides are direct descendants of the early Māori guides, and their knowledge and manaakitanga (hospitality) add depth to your village experience.
Discover daily life in a village powered by geothermal energy

Whakarewarewa is a Māori village where, as for centuries, people still use natural geothermal resources to cook, bathe and heat their homes. Learn from your guide what life is like on a geothermal plateau, where food is cooked in bubbling hot pools and steam vents and people bathe in thermal waters.
View geysers and the geothermal area from a lookout

See the boiling hot springs and natural silica formations in the village, and enjoy panoramic views of the geysers from a lookout. You can also see Pōhutu Geyser, boiling mud pools, steam vents and bubbling pools in the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley.
Explore the marae and historic landmarks

Visit the village's historic landmarks and buildings, including the marae still used by the community (the Māori communal meeting place and center), the World War II memorial arch, a historic church and the tapu (sacred) burial grounds.
※ The tour takes place outdoors and runs in all weather conditions.
