The Buried Village of Te Wairoa is about 15 minutes’ drive from Rotorua. The 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera destroyed the Pink and White Terraces and devastated the village where Europeans and Māori lived. To make the most of the audio guide, living history tour, and talks by costumed guides held throughout the day, we recommend spending at least 1 hour 30 minutes on site.

Explore the museum and archaeological site

At the interactive museum, see collections excavated in the 1800s and learn about the hardships the villagers faced. Then walk through the archaeological site, excavated over nearly 90 years under the guardianship of the Smith family, and follow the story of the night the eruption destroyed the village. You can listen to a local guide or use the electronic tour app.

Follow the waterfall trail to Te Wairoa Falls

Walk the waterfall trail to learn about native flora and fauna and see a landscape that has recovered from violent destruction. Near Te Wairoa Falls, you can feel the spray of the waterfall up close.

Relax at the café and gift shop

At the on-site café Smith & Co, enjoy scones with whipped cream and jam, a selection of pies, and Devonshire tea (purchased separately). You can dress up in Victorian-style costumes for photos and browse the gift shop for souvenirs.
