This half-day guided icewalk from Banff takes you on foot to the frozen waterfalls of Johnston Canyon in winter. Ice spikes and hiking poles are provided so you can walk safely on snow, and you follow steel catwalks bolted to the canyon walls to the Lower Falls and the roughly 30-meter ice tower of the Upper Falls. At the Upper Falls viewpoint, warm up with hot chocolate and maple cookies. Groups are limited to 12 guests per guide, and your guide shares the history and geology of the canyon.

Depart from Banff
and walk through frozen Johnston Canyon
At your chosen morning or afternoon time, meet behind the Mount Royal Hotel in Banff and set off in a modern minibus. Drive about 30 minutes along the scenic Bow Valley Parkway through rich wildlife habitat to Johnston Canyon. The tour takes about 4 hours, in small groups of up to 12 guests per guide.
Strap on ice spikes and climb the canyon on steel catwalks

At the trailhead, your guide shows you how to put ice spikes over your winter boots and shares tips for winter hiking. From here, set off on a moderate 2.7 km hike to the Upper Falls, 135 m higher. Walk along steel catwalks on the canyon walls, looking down at the ice and river below, and learn from your guide how the canyon was formed. On the way, you can stop at the Lower Falls and pass through a natural cave for a close-up view.
Enjoy hot chocolate in front of the Upper Falls ice pillar

At the Upper Falls, the highlight of the tour, take a break on the upper deck and admire the massive ice pillar. On many days you can see ice climbers scaling the frozen falls. Warm up with hot chocolate and maple cookies, then hike back down and return to Banff by minibus.
