Walk the mountain forest trails
of Xitou Nature Education Area

After pickup in Taichung, drive about 1.5 hours to Xitou Nature Education Area in Nantou. Located in the highlands of the Central Mountain Range, it is covered with dense forests of cypress, cedar and bamboo. Spend about 2 hours walking the well-maintained trails while enjoying birdsong and the sound of the streams.

See the sacred tree, estimated to be nearly 3,000 years old, and take in the forest canopy from the suspension bridge and observation deck.

Explore Monster Village, themed on Japanese yokai

Spend about 45 minutes at Monster Village, just a few minutes from Xitou. With red torii gates, yokai statues and monster-themed shops, it's a fun place to try snacks like the famous "monster bread", browse souvenirs and take photos.

Feel Taiwan's history at Lukang Old Street and Lukang Tianhou Temple

Drive about 1.5 hours to Lukang, a cultural center during the Qing dynasty. Spend about 1 hour on the old street lined with craft shops, teahouses and small eateries selling oyster omelets, shrimp rolls and traditional pastries.

Then spend about 30 minutes at Lukang Tianhou Temple, dedicated to Mazu, the goddess of the sea. Watch locals pray and learn about Mazu rituals and the temple's role in the community.

See the colorful murals of Rainbow Village

Drive about 45 minutes to Taichung's Rainbow Village and explore it for about 45 minutes. Once a military dependents' village slated for demolition, it was transformed by a retired soldier known as "Rainbow Grandpa", who covered its walls and alleys with murals of animals, people and fantastical designs. Afterward, drive about 30 minutes back to Taichung.
