Taichung Rainbow Village, Miyahara & Gaomei Wetlands Private Tour

Discover Taichung's art at Rainbow Village
and the National Taichung Theater

After pickup in downtown Taichung, drive about 30 minutes to Rainbow Village. Once a forgotten military village, it was transformed by a retired soldier known as "Rainbow Grandpa", who covered its walls, floors and corners with cartoon-like figures, animals and bright patterns. Spend about 45 minutes exploring.

Next, head to the National Taichung Theater, designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, and spend about 1 hour there. Walk through its flowing curves and cave-like interior, explore the public spaces and exhibitions, and admire how natural light spreads through the building.

Relax on the Calligraphy Greenway and at Miyahara

Stroll the Calligraphy Greenway, a pedestrian-friendly path between the National Museum of Natural Science and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Lined with art installations, boutiques and cafés, it's a great place to see outdoor sculptures or relax with a coffee.

Also visit Miyahara, built as an eye clinic during the Japanese colonial era. With red-brick walls, wooden bookshelves and high ceilings that feel like a grand library, it's a place to browse and taste desserts such as pineapple cakes, chocolates and ice cream.

Explore local creators' spaces in Shenji New Village

Visit Shenji New Village, a former government housing complex turned into a hub for independent designers, artists and young entrepreneurs. Its alleys are filled with handmade crafts, unique souvenirs and quirky cafés, reflecting Taichung's blend of old and new.

End the day with the sunset at Gaomei Wetlands

Drive about 1 hour to Gaomei Wetlands and spend about 2 hours there. Amid vast tidal flats and rows of wind turbines, walk the long wooden boardwalk over the water and spot fiddler crabs and mudskippers in the shallows. Around sunset, the sky and water turn shades of orange and purple. Afterward, drive about 1 hour back to downtown Taichung.
