Hoheikan, located in Nakajima Park in Sapporo, was built in 1880 as a Western-style hotel run directly by the Kaitakushi (Hokkaido Development Commission), which laid the foundation of Hokkaido. It is the oldest existing wooden hotel building in Japan and was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1964. You can see up close the vivid ultramarine blue framing its white walls and the mix of American, European and Japanese styles in one building. At Café Harunire inside, you can also enjoy coffee, tea and light meals.

Hoheikan was built in November 1880 as a Western-style hotel run directly by the Kaitakushi. It is the oldest existing wooden hotel building and was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1964. On your booked date, show your mobile voucher (QR) at the entrance to enter.

The deep blue that vividly outlines the white exterior walls is called ultramarine blue. In the past, this noble color was made from lapis lazuli, a gemstone once highly prized.

The building is based on American style, while the columns at the front entrance and the striking balcony are European style. The plaster ornament at the ceiling center uses motifs favored by Japanese taste, such as autumn leaves and peonies, so you can find many styles and motifs in one building.

Inside is the café corner "Café Harunire," serving coffee, tea and light meals (charged separately).
