Impression West Lake is an outdoor performance that uses the natural scenery of Hangzhou's West Lake as its stage. It was directed by Zhang Yimou, director of the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, and is also known as the show presented to world leaders during the 2016 G20 Summit in Hangzhou. Since May 2017, an upgraded new version, 'Enduring Memories of Hangzhou', has been performed, and the show lasts about 1 hour.

Enjoy dance, lighting and music on the water

The stage is set on the water's surface, and dancers perform in shallow water. With background music, lighting and artificial mist, the whole show appears to take place on West Lake. Folding audience seating is provided, and a state-of-the-art sound system delivers the music.

The show consists of nine acts that blend the myths and legends of West Lake with Eastern and Western dance.

• Act 1: Spring River in the Flower Moon Night — a classic piece of traditional Chinese music depicting a river under spring moonlight
• Act 2: Tea Picking Dance — women picking tea leaves on a green tea plantation
• Act 3: The Butterfly Lovers — the tragic love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, known as the 'Chinese Romeo and Juliet'
• Act 4: High Mountains and Flowing Water — a classic Chinese string piece depicting water flowing down a mountain
• Act 5: Swan Lake — the Russian ballet 'Swan Lake' brought to West Lake
• Act 6: My Motherland and I — a scene expressing love for the motherland
• Act 7: Moonlight — moonlight reflected on the lake
• Act 8: Jasmine Flower — a well-known Chinese folk song
• Act 9: Ode to Joy — the show closes with Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy'
