From Xiamen: Nanjing Tulou Private Day Tour - Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster & Yunshuiyao Ancient Town

Depart from Xiamen or Zhangzhou
and head to the Fujian tulou villages

Your guide picks you up from your hotel in Xiamen or Zhangzhou. Ride in a private vehicle past the rolling hills, rice paddies and small villages of Fujian Province to the tulou area. On the way, your guide tells you about the history of the Hakka people and why they built the unique earthen houses known as tulou.

Stroll beneath the banyan trees of Yunshuiyao Ancient Town

Spend relaxed time in Yunshuiyao Ancient Town, a riverside village known for its 1,000-year-old banyan trees. Walk the stone paths in the shade of giant trees, cross old stone bridges and enjoy the reflections on the clear river.

You will also visit Huaiyuan Lou, regarded as one of the most elaborate round tulou, and Hegui Lou, a 600-year-old square tulou. Hegui Lou leans to one side but still stands firmly. The area is also known as a setting for Chinese films.

Taste Fujian farm-style dishes at a local restaurant

For lunch, you can try farm-style dishes at a local restaurant, including salt-baked chicken, stuffed tofu, braised pork with bamboo shoots and seasonal vegetables. Lunch is not included, and your guide will recommend local restaurants.

Explore the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster and the leaning Yuchang Lou

Arrive at the UNESCO-listed Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster. Its five tulou are nicknamed "four dishes and one soup," and the panoramic view from the hillside viewpoint is especially famous. Explore the interiors of round, square and oval tulou and learn how families lived together in these fortress-like homes.

Next, visit Yuchang Lou, nicknamed the "leaning tulou." Built in 1308, its wooden pillars lean, yet it still stands firmly after more than 700 years. After the tour, return to Xiamen or Zhangzhou.
