This is a private group walking tour led by a local guide. The journey starts near Tongyuanmen, the oldest city gate in Chongqing. In ancient times it marked the boundary between Chongqing and the surrounding areas, but today the city has grown dozens of times larger.

Explore the alleys of a hillside vertical city

Walk downhill along quiet roads such as Huaiwa and Linhua. See blocks where the front door of a 15-story apartment without an elevator is on the 8th floor, and stairways connected by sky bridges cling to the hillside. Because of its complex terrain, Chongqing was built on hills, with long overpasses, stairs and hidden paths branching out everywhere. You also visit an abandoned railway station during the tour.

Meet Chongqing's daily life and history at
the Great Hall square and Zhongshan 4th Road

Visit the Chongqing Great Hall of the People, an imposing Chinese-style building. The square beside it is one of the largest flat areas downtown and a place where locals relax, with seniors square dancing and children playing. Then walk along Zhongshan 4th Road, a beautiful tree-lined street. During World War II, Chongqing served as China's temporary capital, and many historic events took place on this street.

Finish the tour on the riverside boardwalk

Finally, walk the riverside boardwalk away from the noise of the city. Enjoy river views and passing subway trains, with lush plants, twisted roots and abandoned air-raid shelters along the way.
