Luang Prabang Kuang Si Falls Khmu Village Forest Trek with Mekong Sunset Cruise

Start from a rural Lao village
and walk forest trails to Kuang Si Falls

After pickup from your hotel in central Luang Prabang, spend about 9 hours enjoying a village trek, lunch, Kuang Si Falls, the Heritage Rice Farm, and a Mekong sunset cruise. An English-speaking guide accompanies you, and an air-conditioned vehicle, drinking water, and lunch are included. Total walking distance is about 5-10 km depending on the route.

Choose your starting village and route

On the moderate trail, you are picked up from your hotel around 9:00 AM and travel to Ban Long Lao, a Hmong and Khmu village southeast of Luang Prabang. Walk about 9 km for around 4 hours through rice fields, orchards, and farmland into forested hills, with an elevation change of 300 m and some ups and downs.

On the easy trail, you depart around 9:30 AM and travel by boat and car to Ban Nong Heo, a Khmu village about 90 minutes from Luang Prabang. After a short walk through the village with its traditional stilt houses, trek to Ban Thapene, the gateway village to Kuang Si Falls. The elevation change is 150 m, and you can choose a short walk of about 5 km with lunch at Ban Thapene or an extended walk of about 9 km to the forest spring.

Have a Khmu home-style lunch by a forest spring

The moderate trail and the 9 km extended easy trail include lunch at a small open-air restaurant run by a local Khmu family beside a natural spring. Choose from a variety of dishes and enjoy a freshly prepared Lao meal in the quiet forest, then approach the falls from above.

Swim and relax at Kuang Si Falls

Whichever route you choose, you have time to explore Kuang Si Falls, swim in the designated turquoise pools, relax by the water, and visit the bear rescue center.

Visit the Heritage Rice Farm

Head to Kuang Si Heritage Rice Farm to walk among the terraced rice fields and learn how the surrounding mountains and the waters of Kuang Si support local rice farming. Enjoy a glass of freshly pressed sugarcane juice.

Return on a Mekong sunset cruise

End the day on a relaxing sunset cruise back to Luang Prabang, arriving around 6:30 PM. If you prefer to return earlier, you can take a minivan instead of the cruise and arrive around 5:30 PM.
