This lantern making class takes place at a lantern workshop just a 10-minute walk from Hoi An Ancient Town. Choose the full class, where you make a lantern completely from scratch, or the express class, where you choose the silk and finish a lantern on a ready-made bamboo frame. An instructor and interpreter guide you, and you take home your finished lantern and a surprise gift from the host.

Hear the story of lanterns over herbal tea

Begin with traditional Vietnamese tea and traditional music. Your host explains the history of Hoi An's bamboo silk lanterns and why locals believe hanging lanterns in front of their homes brings luck, happiness, and wealth.

Choose your shape and silk color

Pick a lotus, triangle, garlic, UFO, or diamond shape and select your silk style and color with the instructor's guidance. Learn to bend bamboo sticks into your chosen shape and work with materials such as silk and bamboo. In the express class, you first choose the lantern fabric and complete it on a ready-made bamboo frame.

A handmade souvenir that folds flat

Your finished lantern folds easily so you can carry it in your bag or luggage. The class is fun for solo travelers, couples, friends, and families, and children from age 3 can join.
