This 3-hour history tour follows in the footsteps of Date Masamune, the warlord who founded Sendai. With a local guide, ride the Loople Sendai sightseeing bus to visit Zuihoden, his ornate Momoyama-style mausoleum, the Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle) ruins with Masamune's equestrian statue, and Osaki Hachimangu, a National Treasure shrine. Your guide shares stories of Masamune's rule, his diplomatic mission to Rome, samurai culture and shrine etiquette. The tour runs in a small group and includes a Loople Sendai 1-day bus pass.
Meet your guide in front of the large Morinosanka stained glass near the 2nd-floor central ticket gate of Sendai Station. Ride the Loople Sendai sightseeing bus to visit three sites linked to Date Masamune in order. The Loople route connects all three naturally, so there is no need to backtrack.
After about 13 minutes by bus, arrive at Zuihoden, the mausoleum built for Date Masamune in 1637. The original building was destroyed in the 1945 Sendai air raids and rebuilt in 1979, and later restoration brought its elaborate decoration close to its original appearance. Spend about 35 minutes admiring the Momoyama-style architecture with vivid colors, lacquer and gold ornaments while learning about the first lord of the Sendai domain.
Take the Loople bus again for about 10 minutes to the Sendai Castle ruins on Mt. Aoba. Walk among the remaining stone walls and stand by the famous equestrian statue of Date Masamune. Looking out over Sendai from the hilltop, spend about 45 minutes hearing about Masamune's rule, ambitions and international diplomacy.
Ride about 20 minutes by bus to Osaki Hachimangu, built in 1604-1607 by order of Masamune. This National Treasure shrine is known for its Momoyama-period architecture with deep black lacquer, vibrant colors, gold details and intricate carvings. Your guide also introduces basic shrine etiquette and the shrine's connection to samurai culture.
※ Zuihoden has steep slopes and many stone steps.
※ The route may be adjusted slightly due to bus schedules, traffic, opening hours and local conditions.
