Tours & activities worldwide.
Starting from Sendai Station, this tour takes you with an English-speaking guide through the Zen temples of Kitayama Gozan, closely tied to the Date clan, and on to the 100 m Sendai Daikannon. Visit Rinno-ji with its traditional strolling garden and pagoda, Kakuhan-ji where Date Masamune's mother Yoshihime rests, and Aoba Shrine, which enshrines Date Masamune as a deity. Your guide shares the history of this pilgrimage route dating back to the 12th century, stories of Zen Buddhism and the Date clan's influence on the Tohoku region. Train and bus fares and admission fees are included.
The tour starts at 9:00 am in front of the Morinosanka stained glass near the West Exit of the 2nd-floor central concourse of Sendai Station. After a train ride of about 22 minutes to the Kitayama area, follow the pilgrimage route for a close look at a Nio-mon gate, a traditional Japanese garden and a temple famous for its hydrangeas.
Rinno-ji was not originally one of the Kitayama Gozan, but became part of it in name when one of the five temples moved to a new location. It has a traditional Japanese strolling garden and a beautiful pagoda, and is also the burial place of an important historical warlord. Spend about 30 minutes in the garden while your guide shares its history and stories of Zen Buddhism.
Kakuhan-ji is where Hoshun-in (Yoshihime), Date Masamune's mother known as the "Demon Princess of Ou", is buried. Your guide explains her life and her turbulent relationship with the Date clan, especially Masamune. Next, visit Aoba Shrine, which enshrines Date Masamune as a deity. The shrine grounds have six buildings registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Sendai City.
If needed, take a short break in a nearby park to rest and rehydrate, then visit Tosho-ji and Komyo-ji, the last temples of the Gozan. Here you will learn about Date Masamune's influence on culture and religion during the period when the Tokugawa shogunate persecuted Christianity.
Take a bus for about 25 minutes to the 100 m Sendai Daikannon. Spend about 1 hour with your guide exploring the outside and inside of this giant statue of Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. Then return to Sendai Station by bus in about 40 minutes and say goodbye to your guide. The tour ends around 3:00 pm and may run later depending on traffic and crowds.
