Visit Unari Lake Reindeer Farm in a small village about 90 km north of Rovaniemi and meet a reindeer herd up close. Ride a snowmobile-pulled sleigh to the reindeer pasture, hand-feed them lichen, and watch the herd run alongside the sleigh. By the campfire in a traditional kota tent, enjoy warm berry juice and homemade treats while hearing about reindeer herding in Lapland, and learn how herders throw a lasso. Tours run in small groups of up to 10 people, so you can enjoy the experience at a relaxed pace.
When you arrive at the farm, the owners and two Lapponian herding dogs give you a warm welcome. After a short introduction, sit back in a snowmobile-pulled sleigh and head out to the reindeer pasture.
Stop where hundreds of reindeer gather and meet them up close. The most curious ones eat lichen straight from your hand, and there is plenty of time to get to know their calm and gentle nature. Then hand out the daily pellet feed and capture the herd running beside the sleigh in photos.
Gather around the campfire inside a traditional kota tent to enjoy warm berry juice and homemade sweet and savory treats, and roast marshmallows if you like. Learn about the history and sociocultural importance of reindeer herding in Lapland and try the herder's lasso.
Take a forest walk with young reindeer that will soon be trained to pull sleighs. Offer them lichen and they will happily follow you. After the activity, you return to the meeting point.
