This full-day tour from Manado explores the Minahasa Highlands of North Sulawesi. Go white-water rafting on a river in Timbukar Village between rainforest and countryside, and visit Lake Linow, whose water can look different colors depending on sunlight and volcanic minerals. At Mount Mahawu, a short trek takes you to the crater rim with views over Lake Tondano, Mount Lokon and even Bunaken Island. You also stop at a village of traditional Minahasa wooden houses and the ancient Waruga stone sarcophagi, hearing about the region's culture and history from your English-speaking guide. Accommodation pickup and drop-off, lunch and entrance fees are included.
After an early morning pickup from your accommodation, head toward Timbukar Village. On the way, stop at Tinoor Peak, one of North Sulawesi's best-known viewpoints, overlooking Bunaken Island, Manado city, Manado Bay and the surrounding mountains. In Timbukar Village, enjoy white-water rafting on a river surrounded by rainforest, coconut plantations and Minahasa countryside, and catch glimpses of village life along the riverbanks.
After rafting, travel to Lake Linow, a volcanic lake that can appear turquoise, green or brown depending on sunlight and volcanic minerals. Here you have lunch and take a break. After lunch, see bubbling mud pools and steaming vents in a nearby geothermal area, and hear from your guide how volcanic activity shapes the area and the lives of local people.
At Mount Mahawu, take a short walk along a quiet mountain path up to the crater rim. Take in the crater, Lake Tondano, Mount Lokon, Manado city, Bunaken Island and the surrounding highlands. The trek is suitable for most fitness levels.
Pass through Woloan, a village famous for traditional Minahasa wooden houses, and learn about the woodworking techniques handed down for generations. Relax and take photos at Kai Santi Garden, overlooking the mountains and valleys of Tomohon. Before returning to your accommodation, visit the Waruga, ancient stone sarcophagi used by the Minahasa people before Christianity, and hear about their burial traditions and beliefs.
