A pottery experience at Tomiyado, a tourist spot in Tomiya, Miyagi, that keeps the atmosphere of an old post town. Choose from throwing pottery on an electric wheel, hand-building with 500g of clay, or making a lampshade that you can freely decorate and perforate. Anyone can enjoy it regardless of age, and your finished work is fired and shipped to you. The facility also has restaurants, so it is easy to plan lunch or a break around it.

Make your one-of-a-kind pottery
in the atmosphere of an old post town
Tomiyado, the Tomiya-juku Tourism Exchange Station opened in May 2021, is a tourist spot built on the site of a soy sauce factory in Tomiya-juku, an old post town on the Oshu Kaido road. Make your own piece while feeling the history and culture of the Edo period. Arrive by your reserved time and check in, then hear the precautions and basic techniques before starting.
Throw pottery on an electric wheel
Turn an electric potter's wheel like a potter and freely make rice bowls, teacups, plates, sake bottles and more (60 minutes). You can shape up to 4 pieces per person, then choose 1 to be fired in a color from 8 glazes.
Hand-build with 500g of clay
A hand-building experience that adults and children can easily enjoy (60 minutes). Shape 500g of clay into whatever you like by hand.
Make your own lampshade
Make 1 lampshade with 700g of clay (90 minutes). You can freely decorate, drill holes and add color.
Your finished work is delivered by courier
All finished works are sent by Yu-Pack (Japan Post parcel), and a shipping fee based on region and quantity applies separately from the experience fee. If 2 or more people take part and combine the delivery address, no shipping fee is needed. For the electric wheel experience, firing and finishing take about 1–2 months.

By car: About 20 minutes from Izumi IC on the Tohoku Expressway. Free on-site parking is available with no reservation needed.
By bus: Take a Miyagi Kotsu bus bound for Tomiya Eigyosho and get off at Tomiya stop, then walk about 5 minutes.
