This is a roughly 5-hour small-group aurora tour by minibus from your accommodation in Kiruna to the Abisko area. The guide speaks English and the group has a maximum of 8 people.
The tour includes about 1.5 hours of travel to Abisko, a 1-hour visit to STF Abisko Turiststation, 1 hour at an aurora spot for photos and free time, and about 1.5 hours back to Kiruna.
Walk through Abisko Canyon and on the lake ice
On the way you stop at Abisko Canyon, the forest around STF Abisko Turiststation and Abisko harbour. You can walk on the ice of Lake Torneträsk surrounded by mountains, look at the wide sky and listen to the ice growing.
Wait for the aurora at the cloud-free Blue Hole
Abisko lies in a rain shadow and receives only about 300 mm of rain and snow a year, making it a dry region. For this reason the Blue Hole is known for having few clouds, and this is where you wait for the aurora. The guide uses the latest weather and solar storm updates to improve your chances.
At the aurora spot you can take photos, listen to the guide or take a walk. When it gets cold, warm up in the minibus with hot drinks and snacks.
