Highlights
Step inside an active sumo stable (heya) in Nishiarai, Tokyo, and see the real daily life and traditions of professional sumo wrestlers. Rather than a show for visitors, you watch the morning practice wrestlers have kept for generations with a local English-speaking guide, and depending on your option you can add a chanko lunch and conversation with wrestlers, a sumo moves workshop, a topknot (chonmage) hairdressing viewing, a behind-the-scenes stable tour or a chanko cooking experience. During tournaments, morning practice can also be viewed in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.

at an active sumo stable
Your local English-speaking guide first explains the stable's history and viewing etiquette, then you watch the professional wrestlers' morning practice and take photos with them. During tournaments, the same format is offered in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka.
Choose a deeper sumo experience as an option
After practice, you can enjoy a chanko nabe lunch and talk with the wrestlers (meal included), or learn traditional sumo moves in a workshop and try a friendly bout with a wrestler. There is also an experience to watch a wrestler's chonmage being styled up close, with traditional boxwood combs and bintsuke oil.
Explore behind the scenes and chanko cooking
You can also choose a behind-the-scenes tour led by a former wrestler or stable staff covering dohyo preparation, care of equipment and mawashi, and preparation for regional tours, or a cooking experience where you make chanko nabe and side dishes from knife skills onward and eat together (meal included).
