Fascinating tour! The guides were knowledgeable and managed the tour incredibly well. Would highly recommend if you are looking for a unique tour to take in London!

Highlights

This guided tour takes you into hidden spaces of Holborn, a busy Underground interchange station in central London, that are normally closed to the public. Run by London Transport Museum as part of its Hidden London tours, you walk through vast disused areas, some of which have not been open to the public for almost 30 years, with an expert guide. On the two disused platforms of the former Aldwych branch, you can see vintage posters, Leslie Green's Edwardian design and an original early-20th-century signal cabin. You also hear first-hand stories from people who used or worked at the station.

Program

Step behind the hidden doors of Holborn Station
with an expert guide

Holborn Station first opened in 1906 as a four-platform complex serving the Piccadilly line. The station played an important role in transforming the surrounding area into one of London's main business districts. On the tour, you go behind hidden doors with an expert guide and explore the vast closed-off areas beyond. Some of these spaces have not been open to the public for almost 30 years.

Explore the disused Aldwych branch platforms

Walk along the two disused platforms of the former Aldwych branch, rarely used in its day, and look at vintage posters, Leslie Green's Edwardian design and an original early-20th-century signal cabin. Seeing the Piccadilly line from unexpected angles is another highlight of the tour.

Hear the stories of the 20th-century Tube

Hear how these spaces were used as a science laboratory, a wartime shelter for London Transport staff and even the headquarters of a model railway club. Learn what it was like for staff working here at the height of the Blitz, and how the major modernisation project of the 1930s led to the closure of the nearby British Museum station. You will also find out how the station still plays an important role in the future of the London Underground as part of a major signalling upgrade project.

※ The tour route includes uneven ground, dark areas and many stairs. There are no lifts.
