Tom was our guide. He was so perfect. When we arrived he was relaxed and friendly. As we walked around he was considerate - made sure we were all ok. He was happy to chat and answer our questions en route. At each stop he was articulate, concise, and knowledgeable with a really good sense of humour. He ‘distilled’ the most interesting facts in just the right amount of detail. The tour was well planned with each site not far from the next, building a virtual history in our minds. We learnt so much about the area and were left with top tips of places to revisit in depth at a later date. This was our first walking tour and now we can’t wait to do another. 11/10

Knowledgeable guide, very friendly and took requests above and beyond what was required.

Competent guide who could answer all questions or was able to find out while walking to the next stop. Great idea to give the participants a link to read the information given later when back home/in the hotel

Highlights

On this history walking tour, explore Borough and Bankside south of the Thames with a guide and find out why the area was known for centuries as London's 'naughty' district. Hear more than 1,000 years of stories, from the red-light history dating back to Roman times and the medieval 'Winchester Geese' sex workers to Charles Dickens's links to the area. Visit the sites of two notorious Southwark prisons, the ruins of the Bishop of Winchester's palace, Borough Market, London's oldest and largest market, and both the original site and today's Shakespeare's Globe. Ticket sales are limited to 15 people, so the tour runs in a small group.

Program

Walk through 1,000 years of backstreet stories
in Borough and Bankside, outside the City of London

Starting outside Borough Station, you walk about 3.2 km over roughly 2 hours. Lying outside the jurisdiction of the City of London, Borough and Bankside were for centuries a place of drink, entertainment and all kinds of trouble. Your guide explains why the area became notorious for sex work after the Romans arrived, and shares stories of William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and the ghost of a 19th-century pub landlady.

Visit notorious prison sites and an old pub

Pass the site of the Marshalsea Prison, closely linked to Dickens, Crossbones Garden, the Hop Exchange and the George Inn, one of London's old coaching inn pubs. Parts of Southwark's two most notorious prisons can still be seen today.

Explore Borough Market and Southwark Cathedral

Take in the sights of the thousand-year-old Borough Market, then pass the Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret, Southwark Cathedral and London Bridge.

Head to the medieval palace ruins and Shakespeare's Globe

Pass the ruins of the Bishop of Winchester's palace and the Clink Prison Museum, and finish the tour by finding both the original site of the Globe Theatre and today's Shakespeare's Globe.
