From the glorious remnants of ancient Rome to a Papal fortress and even a setting in movies—the Castel Sant’Angelo (Saint Angel's Castle), standing majestically on the Tiber River, is a special place that should not be missed on your Rome trip, even though it is often overshadowed by the Colosseum or the Vatican. WAUG introduces the charm of this place, affectionately known as the 'Angel's Castle.'
From Emperor's Mausoleum to Papal Fortress

Castel Sant’Angelo began its life in 139 AD as the mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian and his family. Later, as Rome declined and entered the Middle Ages, it was converted into a military fortress and a sanctuary for the Popes, and was even used as a prison. Due to its ever-changing use over two millennia, you can discover traces of various architectural styles and fascinating historical remnants throughout the castle's interior. Notably, the lavish apartments used by the Popes and the secret passage known as the Passetto di Borgo pique the curiosity of historians.
The Best View Over Rome and the Vatican City

The greatest reason to visit Castel Sant’Angelo is the breathtaking view it offers. At the top of the castle stands the statue of the Archangel Michael, and from the observation deck below it, you can take in a panoramic view of Rome's skyline, the Tiber River, and the entire Vatican City, including St. Peter's Basilica, all at once. Visiting during sunset is particularly recommended, as the view of Rome bathed in golden light and the reflection of the Sant’Angelo Bridge (Ponte Sant’Angelo) on the river maximize the romantic atmosphere.
When traveling around the Vatican and the Tiber River area, climb up to Castel Sant’Angelo to discover the hidden beauty of Rome.
