Built in 135 BC for the Roman emperor Hadrian, the fortress played a significant role in Rome’s architectural heritage. About Castel Sant'Angelo
The history of Castel Sant'Angelo goes back to 130 AD. Hadrian, the 14th emperor of the Roman Empire, ordered the construction of a mausoleum for himself and his family. However, Hadrian did not live to see his mausoleum completed, as he died in 138 AD. One year after Hadrian's death, Antoninus Pius (86-161), the 15th emperor of the Roman Empire, completed the mausoleum in its current form in 139 AD.
Castel Sant'Angelo is the name given to the mausoleum of Hadrian, which means "castle of the archangel." At the top of Castel Sant'Angelo is a stone statue of Archangel Michael, made in 1536 by the sculptor Raffaello da Montelupo.
Ponte Sant'Angelo
Castel Sant'Angelo is also famous for the Ponte Sant'Angelo. This bridge crosses the Tiber River and connects the center of Rome to Castel Sant'Angelo. There are 10 angel statues on the bridge, and it is popular to take pictures with them.

Castel Sant'Angelo displays Italian military artifacts, sculptures, Renaissance furniture, porcelain, and paintings. The most famous sculpture is Raphael da Montelupo's St. Michael, which is a must-see. Another must-see is the Coronation of Mary by Luca Signorelli (1440-1523), one of the most famous draftsmen of the Italian Renaissance.
