It was so convenient because I could go right in without waiting in line!
The exhibits inside were amazing, but the view of Rome from the rooftop terrace was truly spectacular.

Highlights

Meet St. Michael at Castel Sant'Angelo

Castel Sant'Angelo, originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family, now serves as the National Military Museum. Inside, you can explore a diverse collection of exhibits, including Italian military artifacts, sculptures, Renaissance-era furniture, ceramics, and paintings.

A must-visit destination on your trip to Rome.

Program

Discover Renaissance artifacts at Castel Sant'Angelo

Located on the right bank of the Tiber River, just steps away from Vatican City, Castel Sant'Angelo is an ancient fortress built over centuries. Explore the museum's seven floors and admire the collection of ancient Renaissance artifacts and perfectly preserved frescoes. Built for Roman Emperor Hadrian in 135 BC, this fortress plays an important role in Rome's architectural heritage. Immerse yourself in the stories of the various rooms and admire the artwork inside.

About Castel Sant'Angelo

The history of Castel Sant'Angelo dates back to 130 AD. Hadrian, the 14th emperor of the Roman Empire, ordered the construction of a building to be used as a tomb for himself and his family. However, Hadrian passed away in 138 AD without seeing his mausoleum completed. It was Antoninus Pius (86-161 AD), the 15th emperor of the Roman Empire, who completed it in 139 AD, one year after Hadrian's death.

Castel Sant'Angelo began to be called Sant'Angelo, meaning 'Castle of the Angel', after Hadrian's mausoleum. At the top of Castel Sant'Angelo is a statue of the Archangel Michael, created in 1536 by the sculptor Raffaello da Montelupo.

Sant'Angelo Bridge

Castel Sant'Angelo is also famous for the Sant'Angelo Bridge. This bridge crosses the Tiber River and connects the center of Rome with Castel Sant'Angelo. There are a total of 10 angel statues on the bridge, and taking pictures with them is very popular.

Introduction to Internal Collections

Castel Sant'Angelo exhibits Italian military artifacts, sculptures, Renaissance-era furniture, ceramics, and paintings. The most famous sculpture is St. Michael by Raffaello da Montelupo, which is a must-see. You should also see the Coronation of the Virgin by Luca Signorelli (1440-1523), one of the leading designers of the Italian Renaissance.
