The oldest in Taiwan,
Hsinchu City Zoo

Taiwan's oldest zoo, Hsinchu City Zoo, was founded in 1936 and is now 86 years old. After a long history, it finally reopened in 2019 and has now become a very popular attraction. If you purchase tickets at WAUG in advance, you can purchase them at a cheaper price than on site.

Get up close with animals and explore all five of the park's most popular attractions, including the historic building "Elephant Gate", "Hama Lele", "Bengal Tiger House", "Big Bunker", and "Forest Kitchen". Let’s introduce them one by one below!

プログラム

Even a single door has a long history?
"Elephant Gate"

In the 25th year of the Republic of China, the children's playground at Hsinchu Park was officially opened, and the elephant and lion statues at the entrance were also completed. This elephant door was designed by a Japanese designer, referencing the gate at the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany.

While refurbishing the zoo in 2019, the team peeled back layers of paint to find the most authentic color for the 'Elephant Gate'. Only after peeling off 13 layers was it possible to reveal the elephant's head in its most pristine turquoise color. Even now, many people keep and reminisce about photos taken with the Elephant Gate.

Do you know Hamarele?

Hama Lele is the second must-see after entering through the elephant gate. Hippopotamus Lele, known as Hsinchu Zoo's mascot, has an ultra-low glass viewing window specially designed for children, creating the "cutest skyline" of about 120 to 130 cm. Not only can you comfortably watch the cute hippos shaking their heads or sunbathing in the sand pit, but you can also enjoy the sightseeing without worrying about your children's visibility.

Visit the home of the Bengal tiger

The Bengal tiger's beautiful fur has made it an endangered animal, with less than 4,000 remaining worldwide. Meet the Bengal Tiger Twins up close. You can also see orangutans and bears, our neighbors right next to you. Currently, the number of Bengal tigers in captivity is three times that of the wild, and since they are in danger of extinction, we are doing our best to breed and protect them.

bunker for kids

The sandpit at Hsinchu Park is a large sandpit that is almost 100m long. It is divided into three types of sandpits: a regular sandpit, a fine-water sandpit, and a children's white fine sandpit, so that people of all ages can enjoy it. There is a climbing rope net installed inside, making it a paradise for children to explore.

It is a vast space where parents and children can have fun together, play games, and improve their physical fitness.

Have you eaten?

“Forest Kitchen” is located next to Entrance 1. This restaurant is located in Hsinchu Zoo. It is a new, white building that creates the simplicity and elegance of an art museum.

The big trees in the atrium and the surrounding streetscape can be seen at a glance through the restaurant's floor-to-ceiling transparent glass curtains, and the biggest feature of this place is that you can enjoy the visual impression of the green trees, light and shadow. You can enjoy the scenery while enjoying a light meal. There are antelopes, ostriches, and alpacas outside the window, so enjoy a meal with your animal friends.

I'll show you how to get there

- Exit Hsinchu Railway Station, go north (right) on Zhonghua Road in front of the station, meet Dongda Road Bridge, turn right on the sidewalk under the bridge and go straight to the zoo in Hsinchu Park. The walk takes about 10 minutes.
- Get off at Hsinchu Interchange on National Highway No. 1 and go straight to Guangfu Road toward Hsinchu. When you come across an overpass, do not cross the bridge, but take the outer line and turn left at the Meokja Road and right at the Boai Street intersection.

If you still have time after watching all the highlights!

There is also an insect museum with free admission and unlimited tours on the first basement floor, and I recommend it as a place that parents should also visit. There are many books on animal and plant ecology for children, so they can absorb as much knowledge as they want. The “Insectarium,” converted from a former Chinese radio station, features numerous insects and animals on display, including viewing specimens, raising beetles and small animals, and interacting with insects and animals. It's free, but it's full of content so you don't want to miss it!
