This day tour from Fukuoka centers on Kusasenri, the grassland at the foot of Mt. Aso, and showcases the nature of Kumamoto and Miyazaki in one day. Course A (October–March) lets you relax in Kurokawa Onsen, a traditional hot-spring village wrapped in steam, while Course B (year-round) visits Takachiho Gorge with its emerald river and Amano Yasukawara, filled with stone towers. If conditions allow, you also stop at the Nakadake crater of Mt. Aso. It is a group tour with English- and Korean-speaking staff.
Depart from HEARTS Bus Stop Hakata or Fukuoka Central Post Office, take a short rest stop and head to the Aso area. At the first highlight, Kusasenri, spend about 1 hour taking photos and having lunch. You can see endless plains, grazing horses and smoking peaks in the distance; in winter the landscape turns snowy.
The Nakadake crater is an additional stop, decided on the morning of the tour based on volcanic gas and weather. If visited, you can see the emerald crater lake and rising smoke of the active volcano up close. A round-trip shuttle bus to the crater is required (1,400 yen paid on site).
Access to the crater is currently restricted after an accident. On Course A, if the crater is closed, the tour visits Daikanbo Viewpoint or Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine instead; if it closes unexpectedly after arrival, more time is spent at Kusasenri.
Course A runs from October to March and arrives at dusk in Kurokawa Onsen, one of Japan's best-known traditional hot-spring villages, with about 2.5 hours of free time. Walk the stone streets lined with wooden ryokan and enjoy the steamy village atmosphere. A light-up event is held in winter, but you may miss it depending on sunset time.
Course B runs year-round. Walk along the emerald river and basalt cliffs of Takachiho Gorge for about 70 minutes, then finish at Amano Yasukawara (Amano Iwato), a cave shrine filled with stone towers, for about 50 minutes. After the tour, the bus returns to your departure point in Fukuoka.
