Admire the tea fields of Yame Central Tea Plantation
Leave Hakata Station by bus, visit the Yame Traditional Crafts Museum, then head to the observation deck of Yame Central Tea Plantation, where vast tea fields spread out. The green-carpet scenery unfolds in a panorama, and on clear days you can see as far as the Ariake Sea and the Shimabara Peninsula, making it a great photo spot. Yame tea is a green tea produced in Fukuoka Prefecture and is well known for gyokuro, a premium shade-grown green tea.
Enjoy lunch and a matcha experience at the Tea Culture Center
Visit the Tea Culture Center (Cha no Bunkakan), which introduces the history, production methods and varieties of Yame tea. Enjoy a lunch using local ingredients and Yame tea, and grind your own matcha to enjoy with traditional wagashi sweets.
See the brewing process and taste sake at a brewery
Visit a sake brewery in Fukuoka Prefecture to see the traditional sake-making process up close and enjoy a tasting. Breweries visited include Chikushi no Homare in the Kurume Jojima area, brewing since 1897, and Kobayashi Shuzo, founded in 1792 and still producing small batches by hand. Throughout the tour, a guide who speaks English and Japanese shares stories about Fukuoka's history and culture.
